Steampunk. This fantastical subgenre of speculative fiction has gained much popularity over the last few years. First coined in the late 1980s, the term itself has several distinctions. The general premise can be summed up as ‘how the past would be if certain events in the future had happened sooner.’
Science fiction plays a major role in the Steampunk genre. However, the genre has expanded, leaving literature and embracing the rest of society. People have adopted it, and it has become quite popular.
Modern technology in settings from the past makes for an interesting story. It also makes for awesome outfits, art, and more. This vast collection of props, clothing, technology and more can be overwhelming.
One of the most recent Steampunk adaptations is for escape rooms. This is really cool because Steampunk is so focused on technology and the past. Because of this, these Steampunk escape rooms have an unlimited source of material. With unique stories and perspectives, an escape room can become another world altogether.
Escape rooms are rooms that you are locked inside until you figure out a puzzle to find the key out of there. This activity is super fun and has some real bonding opportunities. I know it brought my group of friends together when we had to escape with a zombie in the room. Now that was fun.
Steampunk escape rooms are comparable to regular rooms in that the same elements apply. With rooms set up with steam-powered machines and 19th-century outfits, you will be immersed in a new, but old, world. In one US escape room, XCape Adventures, you have to turn off ‘The Machine’ to prevent the boiler room from exploding. Now that is pressure.
Finding rooms like these may be a little difficult. There are some in the US and the UK that you can go to. Comparing these rooms to each other is like comparing two different types of apples. Steampunk is a widely adaptable genre, and can take place in many different time periods or places.
Another escape room, this time in the UK, also has the threat of a boiler exploding. However, this time, you are on an airship. You were also locked in by the same person who rigged the boilers. This one is called Can U Xcape?
Comparatively, another US room has you stuck in a time machine. You have to use the complicated Steampunk-y machinery to try to teleport yourself back to the present. Even though it is in the US, this one is set in 1898 in a London railway. It happens at Michigan Escape Games.
It is going to be interesting to see where this takes off to. For escape rooms, the possibilities are endless. Steampunk can be used however you want. It would be fantastic to see more escape rooms with this theme. If it fits your interests and you feel ambitious, you can create a room escape adventure of your own with a Steampunk theme. There are so many things that can be done with Steampunk’s clothes, tech, and more that it would be hard to get wrong.
