GuReview - Beat The Bomb
by Gureviewer: rachelklepadlo
Ease Of Booking :
Website was super easy to navigate, took about 2 minutes to book. Quick note - pre payment for games is not required, but reservations are a must.
Lobby : The lobby is dark and reminded me of a 1990s lazer tag lobby. All that was missing was the neon lights or laser tag guns! Lockers line one wall with a desk, and there is a briefing area at the back of the venue. Overall, it sets the mood that you're about to play a gritty, messy adventure game. Seating is limited in the rear area - when two groups were waiting, there was no available seating.
Hospitality : There is one unisex restroom on the right side of the lobby. Drinks are available for purchase.
Time Keeping : Our game started a bit late due to getting everyone prepped in their suits and using the bathroom. Expect to spend about an hour and a half in total at Beat the Bomb.
Briefing Details : Unlike a traditional escape room, we donned white suits and goggles, preparing us for the battle ahead. A professional 'taper' in the lobby helped seal and secure our suits, and we were assigned a code name and a team name. In groups of ~5 players, we were led to one of two starting points. We would later find out that the two starting points lead to nearly identical gaming experiences with some minor differences. Once we were suited, taped, and tagged... We were ready to diffuse that bomb!
Operator Intro : Exciting - takes you into the story
The staff at Beat the Bomb was fun, professional, and courteous to our team. At no point did we feel rushed, and they were very helpful with managing the paint mess.
The Game :
Unique, Replayable, and messy! This is by far the most 'fun' and 'adventurous' escape style game in the NYC area. It's easy enough for kids to play, and becomes challenging enough to entertain the most experienced escape room enthusiast. Half a point was removed from the game rating due to glitches in both game rooms during our time there.
The Venue :
Great building, beautiful lobby, fun game...I would return to play with others. Half a point was removed from the rating due to not enough seating for all customers booked/waiting.
Main Room - First Glance :
Nice & Neat!
The first room we were led to was dark, with several computer monitors along the walls. There was one larger monitor above us, which gave us the instructions for the game we were about to play. In each room, this larger monitor would indicate what our task was. It was dark, clean, and the rooms were appropriately sized for our groups.
Excellent flow - flawless and coherent
The flow is mandated by a 10 minute timer found in each room, and a red/green indicator telling us when to go from one room to the next. It was clean and efficient. There was no second guessing when it was time to move on.
Some of them were great (matched promised level)
Beat the Bomb has relatively easy puzzles, that increase with difficulty as you progress through each game. You start out battling a computer, then head into a lazer maze, to then play a room sized version of Simon! Each puzzle seems to cater to a different person in the group, making it fun for everyone involved. ADA disclosure: The puzzles require players to run around, kneel, and roll where indicated. Please keep this in mind while booking at Beat the Bomb.
Hints & Clues : N/A
Policy: Loose or no policy
Hints & Clues Quality: Clues aren't needed, the instructions for the tasks are very clear.
Closure & Debrief :
While my group did not succeed in diffusing the bomb, our counter team was able to do so with 2 minutes left on their clock! My group was hit by the paint bomb! We had to disrobe and clean up in a clearly marked area, with assistance from staff. It was messy and a lot of fun! After the game was over, the owner led us into the control room where we could see 'behind the scenes' (and watch others get blasted!). It was really neat. Beat the Bomb records all paint bombs, and posts the videos and photos to their Google Drive within a few hours. Our group had over 200 photos taken of us! This was completely unique, and it was amazing to be able to watch the paint bomb go off numerous times.
