Overview Notes:

Don't let the name of the room fool you - this isn't a horror room by any means, and is a family-friendly experience, as long as your kid can handle being in the dark for a few minutes.

The Venue

Venue / Lobby Info:

Once down the wrought iron stairs, you should be able to see a door marked 'Komnata', else it's a dark door. When you are inside, there is a desk to the left side, a hallway in front of you, and seating off to the left side. The entire lobby is pretty dark and bare, with a coffee table with some hard candy and a few games on it. This game is upstairs, but you begin in the basement.

Public Restrooms: Yes

Refreshments: No

Notes for People with Disabilities:

Lots and lots of stairs at this venue. Call ahead prior to booking.

The Game

Game Introduction: The introduction is given within the first room, in the dark. We weren't quite sure when the game/timer began, and weren't sure what we were doing or what should be happening... It was a very, very awkward beginning.

Operator Intro: Not OK

Theme: Steampunk

Narrative: other

Main room first glance: OK

Once you are no longer in the 'dark place', you'll find yourself in some sort of lab/office area. I can't go into details without giving away this experience.

Flow: Bad Flow

For the most part, our experienced group had an idea of what we were supposed to do, and the ultimate goal of the experience. However, it was very difficult at times to discover what we needed to do in the interim. We ended up having to use clues to figure out what to do / where to go next within the experience.

Puzzles: Many were confusing or with no real justification

Some of the puzzles within this room were excellent - they fit the theme, were intriguing, and exciting. Other puzzles - even after the game was over, we couldn't obtain clarification from the GM as to how to arrive at the solutions. It was very, very frustrating.

Game Strengths:

Beautiful steampunk themed room

Game Weaknesses:

Unclear puzzles - Frustrating GM experience - no 'wow' factor - confusing beginning

Hints & Clues, Debrief

Method: Walkie Talkie

Quality: Not OK

Closure & Debrief: Not OK

Final Thoughts:

I am a huge Komnata fan - but this room is hard to recommend. It is more puzzle filled than other rooms at this location, but lacks the flow and beauty of their other rooms. At the $40+ weekend price tag, I would suggest investing your time in other rooms at this location for a surefire good time. All GMs have bad days, as do players... This was my first experience being told by a GM 'Well, this is how the designer made it' when I asked how to solve a puzzle post-game. Most GMs at Komnata have been kind, talkative, and willing to explain fuzzy areas of puzzles - not this one! Our group actually called another enthusiast post-game to find out how a puzzle was to be solved! It was a very strange experience, and one I hope never to repeat.
