GuReview - MONTAUK PROJECT
by Gureviewer: rachelklepadlo
Game Played On: Saturday, 9th March 2019
Recommended Team Size: 2-4 Players
Kid Friendly: Yes
Game Duration: 60 Min.
Booking Method: Online
Start Time: On Time
Who is this for: Families , Enthusiasts , Searchers , Thrill Seekers
Live Actor: No
Public Transportation: Excellent
Walking distance from Barclay's center and several buses / trains.
Parking: Street parking – some
Leave yourself plenty of time to park, we parked three blocks away and walked over.
Perfect for an experienced duo or trio! I would not recommend more than 4 players due to the linear nature of the experience.
Venue / Lobby Info:
**SAFETY NOTE** You must walk downstairs into the venue. One of our teammates almost fell into the door of the venue due to the stairs not being well lit / clear. Upon entrance to the lobby, you will find yourself in an theatrically staged parlour area. It felt warm and inviting, with seating for 2 - 3 team mates prior to game entry. With one game running at this time it felt cozy and private.
Public Restrooms: Yes
Notes for People with Disabilities:
Some kneeling/crawling/crouching may be involved. Uneven floor throughout the experience with some tripping hazards. Stairs to walk down into the venue.
Game Introduction: Our GM took on the role of a scientist to lead us to our experience. We have about 70 minutes worth of oxygen before some toxin begins to overwhelm our systems... Get what we need and get out! The story line didn't feel the same as on the website, and it was very difficult to follow at times.
Operator Intro: OK
Theme: Fantasy / Fiction
Narrative: Escape a Specific Unpleasant Place
Main room first glance: Wow!
Welcome to the most elaborately themed Escape Room in NYC. You find yourselves in an underground garden with an entire world ahead of you to explore! The space is beautifully crafted, begging to be explored.
Flow: Very Good and coherent flow
Not your typical Escape Room! If you are a fan of point/click adventures on your PC or phone, Montauk Project follows that same train of thought for most of the mission. Interact with the world around you, and see what happens!
Puzzles: Some were quite trivial / No justification
Lots and lots of searching is required for this adventure. With puzzles ranging from simple to obscure, there is enough 'meat' to keep an enthusiast filled group busy. Those with some Escape Room experience will recognize several gaming elements, but perhaps they aren't quite as they appear?
Beautiful, elaborate set design - large playing space - unique interactions
Story line needs to be cleaned up - the story feels so important in the beginning, but is lost a few minutes into the experience. Uneven flooring within dark areas led to several tripping moments. The latter portion of the game feels messy and needs finer tuning to match the incredible beginning of the game.
Hints & Clues, Debrief
Method: Walkie Talkie
Quality: Good (things made sense)
Closure & Debrief: Very Good
I really, really wanted to LOVE the Montauk Project. At double the price of other venues, we had high hopes. The set design exceeded my expectations, but the puzzle flow and story needs some fine tuning. The story line is exciting, I wish it flowed continuously throughout. I hope Myss Tic Escape Rooms takes what they learned designing this game and apply it to future games. I am excited to play their future games.
Did You Escape: Yes
