The Game

Game Introduction: Our GM had us watch a short video, letting us know we were trying to rescue a hostage and save the city!

Operator Intro: Exciting - takes you into the story

Theme: Adventure

Narrative: Find the Missing Person

Main room first glance: Wow!

Oddfellow's secret is an outdoor game, using a mix of physical game components and online navigation.

Flow: Excellent flow - flawless and coherent

Whenever we're playing an outside mission, several variables always come into play - did a store close? Is there a street fair? Would a building be under renovation?? With a built in 'help' and 'clue' system, we were able to smoothly overcome all obstacles within the duration of game play, creating a flawless navigation.

Puzzles: Well thought of. Intriguing

While all of the puzzles were interesting, there was a wide variety of difficulty between them. For experienced Escape Room players, most of the puzzles should feel familiar. One puzzle in particular takes up a significant amount of game time without needing to - the same puzzle strategy is used several times and I'd love to see more variety here.

Game Strengths:

beautiful flow - fun to explore NYC - detailed story line - more than just a 'scavenger hunt' - self paced, independent game - interesting use of landmarks

Game Weaknesses:

The puzzles do not build a sense of urgency - this may be created with the use of additional mission game timers at critical moments.

Hints & Clues, Debrief

Method: Phone

Quality: Excellent (They have advanced the game, built-in escalation, no answer-disclosing)

Closure & Debrief: Excellent (Catharsis)

Game Master Name:

Final Thoughts:

Escape Room enthusiasts will enjoy a change of pace, spending a few hours in the outside world solving puzzles. I would recommend Oddfellow's Secret as a 'gateway game' to non-escapers or for those visiting from out of town. It's fun, easy to get involved, accessible to most players, and runs very smoothly. Make sure to eat a nice meal before playing! As this game runs by limited invitation and booking times, expect to reserve your game several weeks in advance.
