Overview Notes:

Green Mountain Adventure Challenge is a mix between hiking, Escape Rooms, and a Scavenger Hunt. Instead of being in a single facility, we are exploring a 30 mile radius around the town of Dover VT. Spanning Memorial Day to Labor Day each year, teams have the entire summer to complete their mission. During the 2018 Mission, our team sized varied throughout the adventure between 4 players - 11 players. *You are interacting with residents of the town during game play *Car/Motorcycle + Smartphone required to play *There are several miles of hikes involved *Local players may have the upper hand

The Venue

Venue / Lobby Info:

Your journey begins at the West Dover Inn (the creators of the game). Upon arrival, you're given waivers to sign and a backpack full of goodies to explore! Some items are explained (ie: bag lunches are available at the bar) and we're off to begin our adventure!

Public Restrooms: Yes

Refreshments: Yes

Notes for People with Disabilities:

Some parts of this journey were not ADA accessible. Be prepared to hike several miles. We had an infant in a stroller with us who was able to participate about 50% of the time, the rest of the time we found local bars/restaurants/bookstores to hang out at.

The Game

Game Introduction: Within your backpack, several game items may be of use to your team immediately. Explore carefully. Read everything. Remember to begin.

Operator Intro: Exciting - takes you into the story

Theme: Adventure

Narrative: Be an Adventurer

Main room first glance: Looks Good

Flow: Good Flow - one thing leads to another. Sometime not clear

*As this year's adventure is complete, spoilers are explained. These details will not affect future games* Once the journey began, each step of the game required different skills. One of the first tasks was a summit hike of Stratton Mountain, by far the most difficult component of the experience. Several puzzles in the game required location based clues - if you missed something (Al!) you may end up hiking or circling back for several hours. While all of the information for this adventure needed is given, it is open to interpretation.

Puzzles: Well thought of. Intriguing

Some of the puzzles are Escape Room 101 - Cyphers, combination locks, etc;. Other puzzles brought us to physical places looking to interpret what we saw. Forget all 'Escape Room' rules when playing GMAC - things are not always as they seem.

Game Strengths:

Green Mountain Adventure Challenge ties in local history with an amazing adventure story, letting teams explore the area while solving puzzles. Several small businesses participated in this year's challenge, bringing us to shops and restaurants of which we'd never know existed otherwise. We visited waterfalls, hiked up a reservoir/dam, and were given the challenge of looking at our surroundings in a different light.

Game Weaknesses:

In prior years, you were able to go to a central location and perform tasks for hints. This year, there was no such location - there were no clues!! In prior years, we were able to make friends with other teams that we met while playing, and would work together to help each other solve various obstacles. This year, there was little cooperation between teams (perhaps because of the prize money? I don't know!). At one point, I had attempted to give another team a hint of something not to do (that we had wasted precious daylight doing), of which we were told 'Now you ruined it!'. It was awkward and uncomfortable, and similar situations happened throughout the six days (3 days of real game play) on site. We missed feeling connected to other players, and I hope future years bring back the camaraderie that we came to expect of GMAC.

Hints & Clues, Debrief

Method: Other

Quality: Not OK

Closure & Debrief: Excellent (Catharsis)

Final Thoughts:

18 hours of game play spread over two weekends, the Green Mountain Adventure Challenge is an event we look forward to each year. Remember to make friends with other teams, share ideas, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. A full walk through of the experience was provided in September. Take the time to read through it if you decide to participate in 2019! Next year's adventure has three starting locations, so be prepared for a challenge spanning several days!!
