The Venue

Venue / Lobby Info:

The lobby for Komnata is similar to their other locations - barren, dark, yet somehow inviting. There is ample seating for about 12 people inside the lobby, but the staff is very good at controlling the customers and keeping them in their groups while they wait. The lobby for the building is very well kept, the stairs leading up to the 2nd floor haven't been renovated in decades. *Not Komnata's fault*

Public Restrooms: Yes

Refreshments: Yes

Notes for People with Disabilities:

While the building has an elevator, I'd suggest calling ahead prior to booking. This room does not involve kneeling or crawling, but there isn't much of a choice to sit down if needed throughout the hour.

The Game

Game Introduction: We had a lively, fun, personable GM that was no match for the room's overwhelmingly loud sound track. We were on a part rescue / part discovery mission and had an hour to complete the task at hand.

Operator Intro: OK

Theme: Military

Narrative: Gather Intelligence or Espionage

Main room first glance: OK

Our game begins in a hallway that would feel right at home in a Duke Nukem or Fallout game - gray everything with a dirty/worn look (without actually being dirty!). Looking kind of barren, it didn't give an exciting feel as we've seen from other Komnata games. The space felt incomplete.

Flow: Very Good and coherent flow

With the handy use of some Fallout-style tech, our game would progress as designed in a beautiful, elegant flow. Linear in nature, there is enough meat in this game to keep a trio busy for the full hour.

Puzzles: Some of them were great (matched promised level)

We had issues with two puzzles - one due to the sound, and one due to a tech delay. Another puzzle was unclear what it would accomplish (or if it was completed) and had to be redone several times. Some sort of notification or powering off/on of props once complete would be helpful. There was not a lot of 'puzzles' in this game - this is a very scavenger hunt heavy room, especially for being a Komnata game.

Game Strengths:

Great introduction to Escape Rooms for non Escape Room players - Unexpected + large space to explore

Game Weaknesses:

Sound track + particular elements were too loud, overwhelming the story line and crucial game components - incomplete feeling, lackluster set - lack of 'WOW!' moments + puzzle feedback - no puzzle depth

Hints & Clues, Debrief

Method: Other

Quality: Excellent (They have advanced the game, built-in escalation, no answer-disclosing)

Closure & Debrief: OK

Final Thoughts:

The Vault was one of the more well lit, action-based Komnata rooms we've experienced. While a good time was had, at the $50+ price tag per person that we paid (weekend pricing), it's hard to recommend. There are a few small tweaks that would make this 'good' Escape Room truly great.
