Ease Of Booking :
Lobby : The Lobby is tidy and organized, well laid out to maximum the space in the lobby. There is enough space for 2-3 teams. Might be crowded if there are four or more teams in the lobby. ( This might happen in the future after they open their third room.) They have a table and couch for players and teams to chill and play board games. They have approximately 7+ board games available for players to play while waiting.
Hospitality : Customer service is definitely great in Mayze, we were greeted and welcome. They are polite and friendly. They made us feel like we are an important guest to them. They also work really quickly and efficiently. Good customer service is certainly crucial for a good escape room experience.
Time Keeping : As I mentioned before, they were really efficient and got us ready in a snap. We had to wait for a little bit because we were early but the waiting time was really short. Just when we were about to head over and check out their board games selection, we were told that the room is ready. The whole wait time was less than 15 minutes. There is no locker, only a clothes hanger so be sure you keep the belonging with you.
Briefing Details : The briefing was done by the gamemaster verbally, the briefing included the safety issues and also the narration of the room. I really hope they can improve the narration. I believe that a good narration will add extra flavor into the pre-room and escape experience.
Operator Intro : Interesting
The pre-room experience is excellent with a bit of space to improve the narration aspect. The Gamemaster provided good customer service, we surely felt it from the moment we walked into till the minute we left the building. Unexpectedly, while I traveled back to the first room to looked for an item, I found the gamemaster. He told me the time is almost up and he is just here to get a head start on resetting the room. Even though none of my teammates realized he was in the room but I do suggest them to wait until the time is up, then come in and reset the room. (This is just a bit of my personal preference)
The Game :
The game is immersive and presents a decent storyline. They did a good job hiding almost of their wires. I really enjoyed ESCAPE WITH USAVICH. The room is family-friendly and is suitable for all age from small kids to big kids. There are no repetitive or boring tasks when team members are not working, they can still be entertained. I loved the indicator to that show whenever you finished a puzzle, it really helped us throughout the room, making sure that we always on the right track. The tech in the room is fascinating, they worked well with the theme and the room. Nevertheless, there were some tech problems as well, however, it did not have a huge impact on the game. The background music is good but sometimes it’s a bit hard to hear the audio, maybe turn down the volume for the background music or make the adjustment for the audio. The props are nice, they are still in good shape.
The Venue :
Mayze is located in the Scarborough area, the major intersections are Finch and Markham. The place is kind of hidden, there are no signs to show where Mayze is. You really have to look carefully and warm-up your searching skill to spot Mayze. Transportation includes bus and driving.
Main Room - First Glance :
Nice & Neat!
The main room, at first sight, seem a bit disappointing, it felt really empty to me and felt like there was nothing much to do in the room. The room felt pretty big for 5 people, there is a lot of space for us to move around. I do admit that the room looks really neat and clean, it does not look like the Usavich prison you see in the cartoon. (I was kind of expecting that) At first, my teammates were lost and they didn’t know what to do. A few minutes later, they figured it out as I pointed out some clue in the room and we slowly realized the beauty of the room, there is actually a lot of clues and things in the room. There is quite a few “WOW” moment for me and my team, room is the immersive and the amazing use of tech. The moment we left the room, I regretted the poor judgment I made in the beginning, this room really impressed me with the tech and design. They put in quite a few elements of cartoons which I really enjoyed.
Very Good and coherent flow
The Flow is great, with a bit of issue, in the beginning, to figure out everything. Other than that, the general flow of the game is linear and not many problems afterward.
Well thought of. Intriguing
The puzzles in Escape with Usavich are remarkable. I personally enjoy puzzles that are not locks or padlocks. In this room, there are diverse puzzles and only one padlock. I really appreciate the creativity in design the various puzzles that aren’t just lockbox and padlock.(not saying rooms with lockbox and padlock are bad, but they get repetitive easily) There also no time-consuming puzzles such as word search or sudoku. Puzzles are all well thought and with good mechanics. The puzzles are linear, most puzzles can be done in a small group, not much teamwork is required for the puzzles. However, there is the time where you can divide the task of the room and conquer different small task/puzzles in small groups. Puzzles included are both physical and logical. ( I love the physical component, it is kind of frustrating to watch, though) All the puzzles are related to the theme and there is no random puzzle that is out of place.
Hints & Clues : Unlimited hints, use Walky talky to give hints.
Policy: Strict Policy
Hints & Clues Quality: When we try to ask for hints with the Walky Talky, it didn't work. I am sure this is just an unusual event. The only thing I could say is that we are pretty unlucky.
Quality: Excellent (They have advanced the game, built-in escalation, no answer-disclosing)
Closure & Debrief :
The debrief was basically the sum of the experience, there was not much to say for the room since we finished it. The Gamemaster took the time to ask for feedback and questions. They tried their best to answer all our questions. The gamemaster was well aware that we were talking about the room in front of a next group that was going into the same room, they told us to walk a bit farther away before any further discussion. I appreciated that the gamemaster for his good awareness, it would be horrible if the other group heard any spoilers from us before entering the room. The gamemaster ensures the group has the best experience even before they entered the room. Good job gamemaster. They also sell snacks and drinks in case you are hungry or thirsty after the escape, as I mentioned above they have various board games for teams to enjoy.
